The cover story asks “What's Next for Emmalee?” Most everyone in Clarksville watched season 19 of The Voice, even people who had never seen the show, for one simple reason: Emmalee Feldman. The feature catches up with the amazingly talented local artist at the moment her national exposure opened a new set of possibilities.
“Creative Inspirations” tells a quieter origin story. In 2012, Olasubomi Aka-Bashorun flipped a coin with two choices before him — Boulder, Colorado and Nashville, Tennessee. Nashville won, and eventually so did Clarksville, as the talented young artist found his footing and his community here.
The issue also marks a milestone for the magazine itself: this is its 15th year of publishing and its 165th issue, a run the publisher reflects on with a note about being motivated to get outside and stay active in the year ahead.
“For the Love of Art” reminds readers of an asset in their own backyard — Clarksville is home to the second-largest general-interest museum in the state, the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center, a resource many locals underuse. The “Local Heroes” feature rounds out the issue's celebration of the people who make the community what it is.
Together the stories set an aspirational tone for a new year still shadowed by the pandemic: a hometown talent on a national stage, an artist who bet on the region, and a reminder of the culture and heroes close at hand.
The issue also reflects the resilience of a creative community that refused to go quiet through the pandemic — a singer reaching a national audience, a painter who chose this corner of Tennessee, and a museum still keeping the region's art and history within arm's reach. It is a hopeful, culture-forward way to open the magazine's fifteenth year, and a reminder of how much talent the city holds.
