Clarksville, TN – Liberty Park was the site of Lords & Ladies, knights, sword fights, pre-17th-century arts and crafts, and more as the Society for Creative Anachronism hosted a public demonstration event.
SCA’s Lenora Jefferson, aka Raven Atwood, said, “The SCA has been around for 60 years. It was started in Berkeley, CA as a party in someone’s backyard. Several years later it became a recognized organization. It is now multinational.”
“The local chapter is called the Shire of Crimson River, and today is a demonstration day,” Jefferson said. “We wanted to come out and show people that we are here, and give them a glimpse of what we do. We recreate daily life, pre-17th century.”
The local group consists of about 25 – 30 members. A larger group exists in Nashville.
SCA’s Etienne Burgundy said, “We’re doing some simulated sword fighting using rattan weapons. Everyone is armored up for safety, and we have marshals to keep everything safe. This is just for fun. There is also rapier fighting (fencing). In the tents, we have some period crafts, block printing, fabric stamping, weaving, calligraphy, painting, etc.”
According to Jefferson, there are SCA events happening all across the U.S., practically every weekend. Shire of Crimson River can be found on Facebook, also on their website – www.CrinsomRiver.meridies.org
If you’re curious, there will be a large event at Montgomery Bell Park in October. You can find more information on Facebook.
