The issue's substance is F.U.E.L. — Emmaus Ministries' program relieving hunger among school-aged children by discreetly placing pre-packaged, non-perishable food into backpacks each Friday to carry kids through the weekend. Founder Denise Skidmore explains that children are chosen not by income but by signs of hunger, and can be referred by anyone in the school system — a teacher, counselor, administrator, lunch professional or bus driver — based on what they observe. The recommended items are practical and shelf-stable: small cereal boxes, pudding and fruit cups, meat sticks, crackers, granola bars, juice boxes, and tuna or chicken pouches, with monetary donations used to buy more. At CMCSS elementary and middle schools the food goes home; at the high schools there is a pantry teens can draw from directly.
The issue keeps its range around that anchor. A feature on Nothing Bundt Cakes traces the chain from a home kitchen to “an empire” — Dena created the cake recipe, Debbie the frosting, and demand did the rest — now a retailer devoted to luscious, elaborately frosted cakes in a range of sizes for every occasion. The community Spring Book Sale, run by the Friends of the Library, is one of the efforts that group works at all year to raise funds for the local library through sales and membership drives.
“More people, more schools, more teachers” goes inside student teaching in Clarksville, following aspiring educators training in a district straining to keep pace with the region's growth — a look at the pipeline behind the classrooms feeding a fast-expanding county, and the student teachers deciding whether to build their careers here — while “Long Road Home” adds a story carrying its own local weight.
