The September 2023 issue of Clarksville Living Magazine names the sculptor behind downtown's most familiar statues, throws a Studio 54-themed museum fundraiser, and caters Business After Hours on the tarmac.

The cover feature, “An Impact Set in Stone,” profiles sculptor Scott Wise, whose work Clarksvillians know even when his name doesn't register — “The Day After,” the seated man on a bench beside the courthouse, and the Sgt. Carter statue of Frank Sutton on Franklin Street are both his. Wise's name reached the national spotlight in March 2023 through his love of hockey and art. He hadn't set out to become the area's best-known sculptor: after his father's death when Wise was 18, he honored his father's wish that he get an education, enrolled at Austin Peay State University, and found his way into the art department, where sketching led to photography and darkroom work. A 1988 study-abroad trip to London with a group led by Bruce Chiles — taking in the Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum — deepened the path.

The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center hosted its annual Flying High fundraiser at Oak Grove Racing, Gaming & Hotel with a 70s disco theme evoking Studio 54. August's First Thursday Art Walk ranged from a book-signing at the Customs House — historian Dr. Minoa Uffelman with Ellen Kanervo and Phyllis Smith — to D.C. Thomas at the Roxy Regional Theatre, student clay sculptures at Red River Clay, and the juried exhibition at Downtown Artists Co-op.

The Clarksville Regional Airport hosted July's Business After Hours, where Nicoletta's Catering served salmon mousse, pulled-pork sliders and tuna tartare in crispy wonton cups to networking business leaders. And the community of Cunningham marked a milestone of its own: the 115th Lone Oak Picnic, the Central Civitan Club tradition that has drawn generations of Montgomery County families together each summer.
