Empty Bowls opens the year with a simple, effective mechanism: guests choose a handmade ceramic bowl, fill it with soup, and in doing so raised $2,500 for Urban Ministries' hunger-relief work — an afternoon of donated pottery converted directly into meals for local families.
“Jody's Next Journey” follows Jody Isaacs and Steve Tyrrell, whose Franklin Street business the pair have tweaked and refined over the years into a downtown fixture, as they look toward what comes next. Three Daughters Boutique, by contrast, is barely getting started: James and Jackie Lawrence held the grand opening in May 2022, and the shop of on-trend, affordable clothing quickly became a local favorite. It carries sizes from XS to 3X, an entire wall of denim from 0 to 22 including maternity, and has since added children's clothing and lingerie, six fitting rooms and plenty of “insta-worthy” photo spots. The Lawrences are a typical Clarksville family — James is active-duty military, Jackie a stay-at-home mother to their four children, soon to be five — and the business is growing with them: construction had already begun on an adjoining Three Daughters Cafe for early 2023.
“Full Hearts Gather for Empty Bowls” sets the tone, and the Jody profile fills in the backstory: the décor shop she and Tyrrell brought to Franklin Street became an anchor store people talked about, tweaked and refined over the years into the downtown destination it is now. It is a fitting pairing for a January issue — two stories about people who built something lasting on Franklin Street — and the food pages carry the season the rest of the way with satisfying slow-cooker soups built for a Tennessee January, the kind of low-effort, all-day cooking that suits the coldest, slowest month of the year.
