The lead feature opens on Eleanor Roosevelt's line that “well-behaved women rarely make history,” drawing from it a double meaning: the famous few made noise to earn their notoriety, while countless women's stories went untold because their history stayed quiet and invisible. March has been National Women's History Month only since 1987, when Congress passed a motion and presidents began issuing annual declarations.
The piece centers on historical-fiction writer Janis R. Daly, who in 2023 created “31 Titles for 31 Days” — a curated list of little-known stories about women, built on five criteria: the historical-fiction genre for its wide readership, women authors only, diversity in author background and publishing type, diversity in subject matter and setting, and Goodreads ratings. The lists draw on Daly's own research and suggestions from fellow authors, and the writer highlights several titles she has read personally, with synopses, encouraging readers to pick a few from the full 2025 list.
The rest of the issue turns to the community's spring calendar and the businesses, nonprofits and people shaping the season. Local history, food and photo coverage fill out the pages, and the Women's History Month theme carries through the issue's profiles.
It is a bookish, purpose-driven issue — using a single reading list to open a much larger conversation about whose stories get told, and inviting readers to fill in the gaps for themselves.
